How To Wire A 24-Volt Trolling Motor Plug

You’re wanting to know how to wire a 24-volt trolling motor plug and we’re going to help you out with this, so you can go out and spend time doing what you want to be doing – fishing.

Depending on your boat and its size, the size/voltage of the plug you use will vary. If you own a boat that can be labeled as a big one, you will most probably need a 24-volt plug. Ensure you have a battery both powerful and suitable for your craft.  Unless you are getting the job done professionally, you need to know the basics of your boat, and that includes how to wire a 24 volt trolling motor plug.

How to Wire a 24-Volt Trolling Motor Plug

There is a series of wire patterns that you need to keep in mind and follow. One thing you need to know about wiring the plug with your circuit breaker is that the distance between the two needs to be within four inches.

How to Wire a 24-Volt Trolling Motor Plug Basics

There are two fundamental factors that you need to know about the process. These are as follows:

  1. Safety comes first. Even if you are working on something as simple as this wiring, you need to make sure you have taken all the safety precautions. Make sure you are wearing appropriate clothes. More importantly, try to avoid short circuits. To do so, keep the positive terminals of the battery under cover. This will prevent them from contacting other naked wires and shorting.
  2. When you have a battery charger, make sure you wire the two (positive and negative) accordingly; otherwise, you will not be able to achieve your goal.

The Mechanism

There are two parts of the trolling motor plug: a receptacle and plug. Once you insert the plug into the receptacle, the electrical current will start to flow. It is quite a simple connection and will ensure that your trolling motor works perfectly.

Steps for Installation

Though the steps can be a little daunting at first, once you read through them and gain an understanding, you will be able to manage the installation efficiently. Below are a few simple steps you need to follow to wire a trolling motor plug:

  1. Find a place for yourself to work on. The stop needs to be smooth so that you can efficiently manage and complete the installation process.
  2. Drill a small hole, about 1 and 1/8 inches wide, for the receptacle. If you feel that the receptacle is bigger than this, make sure you drill a hole according to that size.
  3. In this hole, you will place the receptacle and drill smaller holes on the side for screws.
  4. Now, you will use the trolling motor wire and plug that at the back of the receptacle. The wires going from the trolling motor need to be stripped off for about half an inch. This goes for both negative and positive ones.
  5. The trolling power leads will now go into the plug, whereas the one with the receptacle will be attached to the battery leads.
  6. The next step is to mount the receptacle on the mounting hole. Screw it in.
  7. Lastly, you will need to wire the battery leads to the battery. Once that is done, you will need to plug in the receptacle, and the trolling motor plug will be wired.
